How to Select the Best Leather Welding Jacket

When it comes to welding, safety should be a top priority. Welders use a good welding jacket to keep themselves safe from sparks, splatter, and heat. So, how exactly do you go about selecting the best leather jacket for you and your needs? We've gathered all the information you need to know to make your selection process as easy as possible.

Types of Leather Welding Jackets

Leather welding jackets come in a variety of different materials for you to choose from. It is important to keep in mind the welding process you are going to use while you wear the jacket.

Stick Welding

As it can get on the dirtier side, the stick welding process creates a lot of sparks and spatter. For this type of welding, we recommend a jacket made from Cowhide or Elkskin. Cowhide leather is extremely durable and heavy duty while being dirt resistant and comfortable. Elkskin leather is heat, flame, and abrasion resistant while being on the thinner side to keep you cool.

Mig Welding

Mig welding is on the medium side when it comes to messes. For this type of welding, we recommend a jacket made from Pigskin or thin-cut Deerskin. Pigskin leather is a bit thinner than Cowhide, but is durable and holds well against abrasion.  Deerskin leather is super lightweight, strong, and abrasion resistant. For mig welding with deerskin, a medium to heavy cut is preferred.

Tig Welding

The process of tig welding is the cleanest and it produces no sparks or spatter. For this type of welding, we recommend a jacket made from Goatskin, Kidskin, or Deerskin. Goatskin leather is light, flexible, and comfortable all while being durable. Kidskin leather is thin, light, and one of the softest leathers on the market. It is also abrasion resistant. For tig welding, Deerskin leather should be a medium to heavy cut. This leather is tough, lightweight, and comfortable.
